Sunday Store Update, “Up in the Air” Edition

up-in-the-air

This week I finally got around to seeing Up in the Air, a movie everyone’s been asking me about recently. Aside from movies on airplanes themselves, of which I usually watch the first 20 minutes before doing something else, this was only my second movie of the year.

Up in the Air, if you’re not familiar with it, is about a guy who loves travel so much that he essentially lives on planes and in Hilton suites throughout the U.S.

As he says in the movie, “Last year I spent 322 days on the road, which means that I had to spend 43 miserable days at home.”

Along the way he earns ten million Frequent Flyer Miles, falls in love, falls out of love, etc. (Hopefully that doesn’t spoil anything for someone – it’s a Hollywood movie, after all.)

In terms of the travel references, much of the film is fairly accurate. It’s kind of like my life, except I don’t have a boss I’m trying to avoid, I don’t make a living by firing people, and I don’t meet many girls who are attracted by airline elite status cards.

I also don’t think the travel lifestyle is as lonely as the film portrayed it to be – just as I don’t always think of loneliness as a bad thing. I love flying, and I don’t travel to escape from something. I like my days at home as much as my days on the road.

Anyway, the film does have some good scenes that made me laugh. For the first ever AONC movie review (probably the last), I give it three out of four stars.

Social Web Price Increase – Coming Next Week

This is the Sunday Store Update, where I share some brief news about the business side of AONC. Today I wanted to let you know that we’ll be raising the price of the Unconventional Guide to the Social Web next week.

Gwen Bell, my collaborator on this guide, normally gets paid much more for consulting than she receives for the 30-minute jumpstart sessions we offer to customers purchasing the Rockstar version. We’re still going to keep it reasonable, but we need to increase it to be closer to market value. New Year, new price — that kind of thing.

Rather than tell you how great the session (and the guide) is myself, I decided to share an unsolicited note I received the other day:

In September, I had my 30 minute rockstar coaching session with Gwen after I purchased the Unconventional Guide to the Social Web. She was awesome… in a few short minutes she helped me see that my ‘story’ and my business’ philosophy were misaligned with my web copy. My copy was simply not indicative of who I am and the impact I want to have on the world.

She encouraged me, told me who to speak with, and what other sites to check out. Within a few days, I contacted a copywriter/web designer and since then, have been working away diligently at a new website that was just launched today.

It is WAY more clear about what I do and the impact I want to have on helping clients become better in their careers and personal lives.  And I have Gwen and her amazing advice to thank!

I’m so glad that Andrew enjoyed the session with Gwen. Anyway, I wanted to give everyone some warning before I raised the price. Next week I’ll be reporting from the South Pacific, and somewhere in between Tonga and Samoa I’ll flip a switch and raise the price of this one.

If you’re interested in using new media to get your message out to the world, this will help you a lot more than the $800 “How to Use Twitter” guide that doesn’t include 800 free iTunes downloads.

That’s it for this week’s store update. I hope your holidays are going well, and I’ll see you tomorrow with our regular programming.
