Out of the blue—we just heard yesterday—Southwest Airlines has introduced an all-new awards card, the Southwest Airlines Plus.

This card offers a a 50,000 point bonus after a low $2,000 minimum spend. Southwest also promises that these points will count toward Southwest’s always-popular Companion Pass, where you can take the companion of your choice with you on every trip for an entire year.

This is the first big travel hacker offer of the year, and—at least to me—it came as a bit of a surprise. Southwest has millions of loyal fans who love their point-to-point service, unassigned seating, and general friendliness. But they already have two cards, one business and one personal. This all-new card makes it much easier to earn even more points for those who are interested in travel on Southwest.

In addition to the improved signup bonus, the card also offers the following benefits:

  • Earn unlimited points that don’t expire as long as your account is open
  • Earn an additional 3,000 points after your cardmember anniversary every year
  • No blackout dates or seat restrictions
  • No change fees

For a lot of people, this is a great offer. Just remember one thing: if you can only get one card, you probably want it to be the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

This is the single best card to start with, since the points are more flexible than those earned through the Southwest Plus card. However, once you have that one, you’re then free to pick up the Southwest Plus and anything else you want.
